Veterinary office

The Veterinary Office deals with food hygiene, animal diseases and animal by-products, animal welfare, veterinary medicines and travelling abroad with animals.

Course description

The origins of the city’s veterinary inspections of food and livestock date back to 1823. At that time, the Munich City Council appointed two veterinarians to carry out inspections of meat and livestock. In 1862, the City Council issued a series of regulations concerning the trade in foodstuffs. A municipal food inspection office, headed by the district veterinary officer, was established to carry out the inspections of meat, sausages, game, fish and milk required under these regulations.

The monitoring of meat hygiene remains a specific component of veterinary services.

Today, the official veterinarians at the City Veterinary Office play an important role not only in consumer protection but also in animal welfare and the control of animal diseases. They are also the point of contact for animal by-products, veterinary medicines and travelling with animals abroad.

Below you will find a list of the Veterinary Office’s key services and further information on these.
