Change of address in vehicle documents
If the address of the person or company in whose name a vehicle is registered has changed, you must have this entered in the vehicle documents without delay.
Description
If you move house, you must register your change of address as soon as possible. The law stipulates a period of 14 days. If you have already registered your new address but have not yet updated your vehicle documents, you can now do this easily from home.
If you register your new address at one of the citizens’ service centres, you can also have your vehicle registration documents updated at the same time.
Important note
You can now make this change easily online. To have your vehicle documents amended in person, you will need to book an appointment.
Requirements
It doesn’t matter whether you are moving within Munich or moving to Munich. If you hold a credit-card-sized identity card and an electronic residence permit, your new address must be updated on the ID card’s chip.
Please note that it is not possible to change your name (e.g. due to marriage) online! To do so, please make an appointment at your chosen office.
If you wish to change your address on your vehicle documents online, you will need:
Internet access, a compatible device and a user account
- a stable internet connection
- An up-to-date browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge
- An ID card with online functionality
- ID App 2 (available from any app store)
- Electronic residence permit (eAT) with the online ID function activated and a PIN (if you need help with activation, please contact the authority responsible for the eAT)
- BayernID or BundID user account or private ELSTER certificate
- If the vehicle is registered to your company: an ELSTER business account
- A printer, so that you can ‘drive off straight away’ with the printed provisional registration certificate (valid for up to ten days in Germany)
If you wish to change your address on your vehicle documents in person, you will need to book an appointment at your chosen registration office. Please read the section ‘Requirements and documents required for the local registration office’ for further details.
