Course description

The city of Munich has set itself the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2035 and supports the sustainability goals of the 2030 Agenda. Munich is working to achieve these goals with many different measures. But it needs the commitment of an active urban society: everyone can contribute to keeping our planet liveable for future generations.

This is why the City of Munich supports projects in the areas of sustainability, resource, climate, environmental and species protection.

Equal opportunities and gender equality are important for sustainable development. For this reason, projects and institutions that take these points into account in the areas listed above and link them with each other are to be supported in particular

Projects that have already begun cannot be funded.

Please note the different deadlines for funding above or below 25,000 euros.

Prerequisites

The Department for Climate and Environmental Protection supports associations, clubs and organisations that are committed to sustainable development in Munich. Individuals are also eligible to apply.

This must be fulfilled:

  • The concept and objectives contribute to the realisation of Munich's climate and environmental goals
  • The concept and objectives contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda
  • Equality of all genders is promoted
  • Discrimination is prevented

An application contains the following documents:

  • Application form (the Excel file can be found under "Application documents")
  • Proof of non-profit status, e.g. current notice of exemption, articles of association
  • Proof of authorisation to sign, e.g. extract from the register of associations or identity card for natural persons

Duration and costs

Processing time

Projects with a funding volume of up to 25,000 euros can be submitted at any time up to 30 September. Please allow around six weeks for processing.

A different rule applies to projects with a funding volume of over 25,000 euros: these applications must be submitted by 30 April of each year. The decision on funding is made by the city council in the fourth quarter of the year in which the application is submitted. The project can begin in the following year.

Important: For project funding of over 25,000 euros, you must have already successfully completed a smaller project with funding of up to 25,000 euros from the Department for Climate and Environmental Protection.

Fees and charges

The City of Munich supports projects and programmes that contribute to achieving the city's climate and environmental goals as well as the sustainability goals of Agenda 2030.

Projects that strive for greater integration of gender equality and equal opportunities in the areas listed and thus lead to positive social and ecological effects are of particular relevance.

funding can only be provided within the limits of the funds available in the annual budget. Please note that all project proposals over 25,000 euros are submitted to the Munich City Council for a decision. There is no minimum or maximum limit for non-profit organisations. Project proposals from individuals are limited to 6,100 euros. Material and personnel costs are eligible for funding.


If you receive a funding commitment from us, you must make clear reference to our support in all publications (in both print and digital formats) and at events that you organise as part of the project.

Please use the logo of the Department for Climate and Environmental Protection and add an appropriate addendum in accordance with the ancillary provisions. You can download the logo under "Application documents".

Legal basis

The financial resources for promoting commitment to sustainable development are provided as voluntary benefits in accordance with the applicable grant guidelines. There is no legal entitlement to them; they are dependent on the budget funds available.
