Concept

Playful art or artistic play?

Since the 1970s, the art world has been developing accessible and participatory play spaces. Munich has embraced this concept and our municipality is keen to try out the idea of KunstSpielOrte/ArtPlayPlaces for everyone in Messestadt Riem. They may include interventions, objects or projects that create the opportunity for people to come together in public spaces. Individuals of all ages, cultural backgrounds or physical abilities should be able to engage actively and creatively with art and play.

All types of proposal are welcome, ranging from artistic installations, participatory play or hitherto unimagined formats. The main aim is to involve people of all ages in creating the project, bringing it to completion and enjoying the completed KunstSpielOrt/ ArtPlayPlace, with art and play remaining central to the entire project.

We intend to host a symposium in October 2024 to evaluate progress once our experimental KunstSpielOrte/ArtPlayPlaces have been in operation for one year. In the longer term, the experience we glean in Riem may be used in the development of one or more future KunstSpielOrte/ ArtPlayPlaces.

This call for proposals invites all interested cultural and art education professionals, artists, and interdisciplinary teams to submit their project proposals.

There are no particular format requirements for these KunstSpielOrte/ArtPlayPlaces and all forms of artistic creation are welcome. What is important is:

  • that art and play enter into a mutual relationship;
  • that this occurs in the public space of Messestadt Riem and engages with this district and the people who live here;
  • that people and/or initiatives (associations, institutions) from Messestadt Riem are able to participate actively either in the creation and development of the project, in its implementation or in the completed project itself;
  • that the project can be adapted to each age group in at least one respect;
  • that the project is instantly accessible to all and that people from different backgrounds can also connect with it.

About the venues in Messestadt Riem

Messestadt Riem – potential implementation sites

Messestadt Riem is one of Munich’s newest districts. It is located in the east of the city on the site of Munich-Riem Airport, which was closed in 1992. With its plentiful open spaces, urban infrastructure and committed residents (pioneers in car-free living, zero-energy houses), it is an ideal place to experiment with new art formats and novel ideas.

We welcome submissions for projects in the public spaces in Messestadt: parks, sidewalks, plazas, all publicly accessible spaces. These locations are given purely for illustrative purposes and no guarantee can be given that any specific art intervention would receive approval.

Local collaborative partners

Messestadt already has many committed initiatives and stakeholders.

Please feel free to take part in our information events where you can get to know potential project partners and find out more about the project:

Organization

The implementation of the art projects will be carried out by the artists, cultural and art education professionals, and the interdisciplinary teams. They will receive support from a production agency committed to all selected projects. It will be responsible for the organizational/technical coordination and preparation of the individual KunstSpielOrte/ArtPlayPlaces, and deal, for example, with administrative matters (permits, insurance, etc.) and the procurement of technical equipment.

For this purpose, the production office will draw up a contract with each project manager and pay any fees incurred. Production costs are borne exclusively by the production office.

Press and public relations will be handled by another agency.

Frequently asked questions

All criteria should be taken into consideration, but need not all have the same priority. Please comment on the different criteria and explain your priorities.

Yes. However, it should always invite active, artistic/playful engagement and/or be developed or produced in a participatory manner.

Projects can be of any duration, but preparations may not begin before Sept. 1, 2023 and projects must be completed or dismantled by Dec. 31, 2024.

The KunstSpielOrte/ArtPlayPlaces in Messestadt are intended as a field trial and may serve as inspiration for future KunstSpielOrte/ArtPlayPlaces.

No, you can decide what form of participation you will propose and in what ways local people will be involved. Please explain exactly what the participatory implementation will look like.

Ideally, KunstSpielOrte/ArtPlayPlaces should appeal to all age groups.

The idea is to create new, non-commercial meeting places that offer opportunities for active, cross-generational participation in public spaces.

There should be options that everyone can use depending on what suits them best in terms of age, gender, background, or individual capabilities. In essence: KunstSpielOrte/ArtPlayPlaces should offer everyone something they can connect with, although it does not necessarily have to be the same thing for everyone.

You can apply for 25,000 to 80,000 euro for your project. Costs must be reasonable, fees must be fair and set out in as much detail as possible in the cost plan.

Between three and eight projects will be selected, depending on the funding applied for. A total of 240,000 euro is available for the KunstSpielOrte / ArtPlayPlaces.
