One Young World Summit in Munich

Between 22 and 25 July 2021 Munich was Host City of the One Young World 2021 Summit.

After being postponed twice due to the Corona pandemic, the One Young World Summit finally took place in a hybrid format from 22 to 25 July 2021. 

More than 1,800 young leaders from over 190 countries participated in the Summit. About 700 delegates were able to join the Summit on site at Olympiahalle in Munich under a strict hygiene protocol. The rest of the delegates participated via a digital platform.

The theme of this year's Summit was innovation. For four days the delegates discussed topics such as the climate crises, rights & freedom, conflict resultion, how economic growth can be more just and lessons from the pandemic. They were advised by renowned Counsellors from the fields of politics, business, culture and sports such as Professor Muhammad Yunus, Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of BMW Group, Halima Aden and Sir Lewis Hamilton.

Munich as Host City

For the City of Munich the Summit was an opportunity to present itself to an international audience as a city with a strong economy that is also welcoming and innovative and offers a unique quality of life. 

As Host City, Munich organised the Summit's Opening Ceremony. Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter welcomed the delegates in the Olympiahalle and on the digital platform. Chancellor Angela Merkel as well as Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder adressed the delegates with a video message. Presenter Funda Vanroy lead through the evening which also featured local artists Jazzrausch Bigband, Jesper Munk and DDC.

The Host City also organised the social program around the Summit including live and virtual city tours and delegate dinners.

The Summit finished with the Closing Ceremony at one of Munich's most spectacular locations: BMW Welt.

One Young World

Prior to the Summit, One Young World Ambassadors from Munich had invited start-ups from Bavaria to take part in the Social Business Challenge Munich. Contendors had to demonstrate a business concept in line with the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs). 

In the finals, selected contenders had to present themselves in front of the jury. The three winners Integreat, NUI Care and StartSomewhere were then given the opportunity to participate in the One Young World Summit, where their presentations received huge interest from the audience.
