Apply for/change permanent red licence plate for dealers, workshops and manufacturers

Vehicle dealers, garages and manufacturers can obtain permanent red licence plates for their own business use.

Course description

The following journeys may be carried out with it:

  • Test drives to determine the serviceability of the vehicle
  • Journeys that are necessary for technical inspections by officially recognised experts or test engineers
  • Transfer journeys (only within Germany)

Prerequisites

  • For legal entities, commercial enterprises, traders:
    Munich is the place of business (head office or branch)
  • A driver's logbook must be kept.

Required documents

  • written, informal application (with justification of the need)
  • Identity card or passport
  • current certificate of good conduct or European certificate of good conduct for submission to an authority (document type: OB!)
  • current information from the driving aptitude register
  • Business registration (copy)
  • For legal entities, companies and associations: Extract from the commercial or association register and business registration (not older than 3 years from issue) as well as power of attorney and ID of the authorised signatory and authorised representative
  • eVB number (electronic insurance confirmation)
  • SEPA mandate of the vehicle owner/account holder
  • Proof of need (e.g. with purchase contracts)
  • Proof of the sales location (copy)

Vehicles that were first registered at least 30 years ago can receive a classic car licence plate, which is marked with an "H" at the end.

If you have lost one (or both) licence plates or they have been stolen, you must report it to the registration office where your vehicle is registered.

Vintage vehicles that are deregistered can be given a permanent red licence plate. This allows certain journeys to be made (if justified).
