Second passport, other passports
As a rule, you may only hold one valid German passport. For an exception (second passport, several passports) you must prove your legitimate interest.
Course description
As a rule, you may not hold more than one valid passport issued by the Federal Republic of Germany. For an exception to be made, you must be able to provide concrete proof or credible evidence of a legitimate interest in a second passport or several passports. Each individual case is carefully scrutinised. Exceptions are handled very restrictively.
Another passport is valid for 6 years.
Express order: A so-called express passport can also be ordered from the Bundesdruckerei. The processing time (application to delivery) is about six working days and costs 32 euros in addition to the fee.
Important note
Appointment: You must book an appointment via the contact form to visit us. Each individual case is carefully assessed. Exceptions are handled very strictly.
Required documents
- An informal written application with a detailed, well-founded explanation and supporting evidence (for example, a letter from the employer specifying the countries to be visited and the dates of travel; booking confirmations for flights/hotels; letters of invitation; correspondence)
- A recent biometric passport photograph
- Please note: Since 1 May 2025, we generally only accept certified digital passport photos.
Important: In cases of doubt, further documents and supporting evidence may be required (e.g. current civil status certificates, proof of German citizenship). In such cases, you may need to visit us in person again.
Questions & Answers
If you urgently need the additional passport and even the express order takes too long, you can apply for a temporary passport, which you can take with you immediately.
- The temporary passport is valid for one year.
- You must prove or credibly demonstrate that you urgently need the temporary passport.
- You can obtain details on the travel modalities of individual countries from the Federal Foreign Office, your travel agent or the embassy of the country in question. They will provide you with up-to-date information on whether a temporary passport is accepted for entry.
