Questions & Answers

In principle, you may only drive within the Federal Republic of Germany with short-term licence plates.

You must observe the following:

  • If you have a valid main inspection for your vehicle, you may drive anywhere in the Federal Republic of Germany until the short-term licence plates expire.
  • If you do not have a valid main inspection, you may only drive to the inspection organisation located in the registration district or neighbouring registration district in which your vehicle is registered to obtain the main inspection. It is only possible to continue driving throughout Germany if you have passed the main inspection.

If the short-term licence plate is still valid and you would like to register your vehicle on normal licence plates, you must bring the short-term licence plates with you to the registration.

Arrange an appointment

Vehicles without an EC operating licence or individual operating licence may only use short-term licence plates for journeys that are directly related to obtaining a new operating licence. These journeys may only be made in the registration district or neighbouring registration district that is responsible for the location of the vehicle.

The licence plate belongs to the owner, who can dispose of it or keep it.
