The robotaxi provider Waymo is coming to Munich

This makes Munich the first German city where Waymo is launching its driverless ride hailing service. The first test drives will take place in the coming weeks.

Test drives will start soon

Soon, Waymo's first driverless taxis will be seen on Munich‘s streets. During test drives, the vehicles are still manually driven by trained specialists. The test phase starts with high-definition mapping of local street networks, which enusres that the associated autonomous system—the Waymo Driver—is adapted to Munich’s distinct driving conditions.

Waymo plans to open its autonomous ride-hailing service to passengers by the end of 2027. This would make the Bavarian capital – alongside London – only the second European city to offer commercial robotaxi services.

How does the admission process work?

According to Waymo, the company is in close contact with the relevant German authorities in order to obtain the necessary approvals. The legal framework for fully autonomous driving in Germany was established in 2021.

With over 20 million driverless trips and 350 million fully autonomous kilometres, the Alphabet subsidiary can draw on a wealth of experience. In the US, Waymo’s robotaxis are in regular service in eleven major cities, with more set to follow.

The combination of a strong automotive sector – with a wide range of manufacturers and suppliers – global tech companies that use Munich as a testing ground for future trends, research institutions with specialised mobility clusters, and innovative start-ups provides an excellent environment for autonomous driving in Munich.
