Munich Urban Colab, the new innovation center in Munich’s “Creative Quarter”, is a joint initiative of the City of Munich and UnternehmerTUM.

Platform for the city of the future

At the Munich Urban Colab, startups, established companies, voices from science and the creative industries, and local government bodies are developing and testing innovative solutions to urban challenges together with citizens.

The Munich Urban Colab opened in 2021 and is a joint initiative of the City of Munich and UnternehmerTUM gGmbH. It is run by Munich Urban Colab GmbH, in which the City of Munich and UnternehmerTUM gGmbH hold a 17 and 83 percent share respectively. Managing Director is Claudia Frey.

The Technical University of Munich’s entrepreneurship center UnternehmerTUM is Europe’s most successful academic center of its kind, with around 50 technology startups emerging there each year. The center supports entrepreneurs at all stages, from initial idea to entering the stock market, and is involved in the Munich Urban Colab with numerous accelerator programs.

The Department of Labor and Economic Development coordinates the Munich Urban Colab’s Munich City Lab, which welcomes projects from other city departments. The Munich City Lab offers city government organizations access to the Munich Urban Colab, and vice versa, as a way of promoting innovative economic development.

Alongside UnternehmerTUM and the City of Munich, various startups, the Bavarian State Ministry of Digital Affairs, and numerous other projects and initiatives are involved in the Munich Urban Colab.

Infrastructure

The Munich Urban Colab was designed by Steidle Architects. Spread over 11,000 square meters, the building offers

  • office space
  • co-working areas
  • event and seminar rooms (see also event exposé )
  • living labs
  • the high-tech prototype workshop Makerspace
  • a café, two sunrooms and a fitness room

Companies and individuals can hire event and seminar rooms and co-working space.

The Makerspace can also be used by individuals. The first floor and second floor of Munich Urban Colab are freely accessible. Anyone interested in the new innovation center can drop by for a look and grab a coffee or some food in the cafe.
