Tips for finding mushrooms

  • Collect moderately and in an environmentally friendly way.
  • Leave old, eaten, rotten and very small, young mushrooms where you find them.
  • Cut them off or twist them out? It makes no difference to the fungus organism. For a reliable identification, however, you or the mushroom consultant need a whole fruiting body with a stem base.
  • Always store unknown species separately from edible mushrooms for identification. Plastic containers with lids or aluminium foil are suitable for this purpose.
  • Check the mushrooms for maggots while still in the forest. Store the mushrooms in a cool place and bring them to the mushroom centre as fresh as possible.
  • Only prepare flawless, fresh mushroom fruiting bodies that you have recognised beyond doubt as edible mushrooms.
  • Many wild mushrooms are unpalatable or poisonous when raw, so heat the mushrooms sufficiently (for about 20 minutes, depending on the type and quantity).

Suspicion of mushroom poisoning

  • All persons involved in the mushroom meal must receive medical treatment, even if they do not yet have any symptoms.
  • Never induce vomiting with table salt!
  • Never drink milk!
  • Save cleaning residues, leftover food, vomit, faeces and urine for diagnosis.

Restricted party traffic is to be expected in the counselling centres. Wearing a face mask is mandatory, and the minimum distance requirement of 1.50 metres also applies.

Questions & Answers

There are about 2400 flowering plants in Bavaria, but twice as many species of fungi.

Without fungi there would be no forest. The reason for this is that almost all forest trees form a symbiotic relationship with fungi via their roots and thus an exchange of nutrients takes place. Fungi decompose dead organic material, including wood, on a large scale and return it to the natural cycle.

in dry periods, it can take up to two weeks for fungal growth to start after heavy rainfall.
