International vehicle licence

If you want to drive your vehicle temporarily outside Europe, you will need the international vehicle licence as a translation of your national vehicle licence.

Description

An international vehicle licence is a translation (into other languages) of the national vehicle licence. You need this if you want to drive a vehicle registered in Germany temporarily outside Europe. We recommend that you enquire at the responsible foreign representative office in the respective country whether an international vehicle licence is required.

The international vehicle licence is issued in addition to the existing registration certificate part 1 (vehicle registration document) and is valid for one year.

Required documents

  • Registration certificate part I / vehicle registration document
  • Identity card or passport with registration certificate (not older than six months)
  • For proxies: written power of attorney (original) as well as ID of the authorised representative (original) and ID of the principal (copy)
