Apply for a travelling trade licence
Anyone wishing to carry out a travelling trade must first apply for a permit from the trade authority.
Description
A travelling trade exists if someone (without a prior order from the customer) outside their commercial establishment or without having such an establishment
- Buys goods and/or
- Sells goods and/or
- Takes orders for goods and/or
- Offers services and/or
- Accepts orders for a service or
- carries out an activity in the showman sector
The trade authority checks your reliability and obtains information from the Federal Central Criminal Register and the Central Trade Register. If the licence can be granted, a travelling trade card will be issued for you. You will receive a notification by post when you collect your travelling trade card.
You must always have the travelling trade card with you when you are carrying out the commercial activity and be able to show it on request.
Anyone working in the travelling trade as an employee must carry a duplicate or a certified copy of the holder's travelling trade card with them if the holder is not working at the same location. A ban on employment may be imposed on unreliable employees.
The travelling trade licence entitles the holder to work anywhere in Germany.
Since 1 October 2007, so-called "travelling caterers" (e.g. mobile snack vans) also require a travelling trade licence. However, only if non-alcoholic drinks and prepared food are sold for consumption on the spot. Since the Federal Catering Act still applies in Bavaria, a permit (§12 Catering Act) is required from the competent authority when serving alcoholic beverages, as was previously the case. However, this can only be granted if there is a special reason.
