Questions & Answers

Lost property is lost items. This includes items that have not been deposited, left or disposed of, such as old car tyres, expired medication, old furniture or televisions left in the cellar or in the bin; these items are excluded from acceptance by the lost property office.

  • Perishable and expired food, medicines and the like.
  • Broken or soiled items that are obviously worthless.
  • Items that require special storage: Fire extinguishers, gas cartridges, canisters with unknown contents, batteries, chemicals of a non-household nature and quantity, motorised vehicles and the like.
  • Objects that obviously need to be disposed of separately: old furniture, car tyres, electrical appliances, gas cartridges, fire extinguishers, batteries, chemicals of a type and quantity that is not normal for households, motorised vehicles and the like. Information on this can be obtained from the Munich Waste Management Department and the Building Department.

A lost property report will be issued. It contains the following points:

  • Finder's details
  • Date found
  • Location
  • Description of the lost property
  • Your agreement to hand over the lost property to an authorised person.
  • Your entitlement to finder's rights, such as a finder's reward

The finder's fee is five per cent of the value of the item up to a value of 500 euros. If the item is worth more than 500 euros, the finder's fee is 3 per cent. Example calculation: Value of the item: 800 euros, 5 per cent up to 500 euros = 25 euros 3 per cent for the remaining 300 euros = 9 euros makes a total finder's fee of 34 euros.
