Driving ban on Sundays and public holidays - exemption authorisation

On Sundays and public holidays, lorry traffic is prohibited between midnight and 10 pm. You need an exemption licence for essential journeys.

Description

The driving ban applies to lorries over 7.5 tonnes. This includes empty lorries.

Exceptions are possible, for example, if the transport is urgent and in the public interest (e.g. so that public supply facilities can be maintained).

There are general exceptions to the ban on driving on Sundays and public holidays. In these cases, you do not require an exemption licence. For individual information, you can contact us directly (see "Contact").
Some typical examples are listed here:

  • Transport of fresh milk, fresh meat, fresh fish and perishable fruit or vegetables
  • Transport of agricultural products during the harvest season. This refers to products that are still in their original state, i.e. have not already been processed (e.g. cereal grains, but not flour). Preparation, cleaning, drying, (intermediate) storage, transhipment and similar processing steps are not considered further processing.
  • Caravan trailers and trailers towed behind lorries with a maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 tonnes for sports and leisure purposes
  • Emergency journeys by recovery, towing and repair vehicles (including empty journeys to or from emergency sites)
  • Tractors used exclusively to tow other vehicles as well as tractors and articulated lorries with an auxiliary loading area whose payload is not more than 0.4 times the maximum authorised mass
  • Vehicles in which the transported objects are part of the inventory, such as exhibition, film and television vehicles as well as showmen's vehicles
  • self-propelled machines (e.g. mobile cranes)

Prerequisites

  • Individual authorisation: The load is picked up in Munich.

Can exemptions also be applied for for several Sundays and public holidays?
Exemptions from the ban on driving on Sundays and public holidays can be applied for for individual Sundays or public holidays or for a longer period (maximum 12 months).

What about journeys for film shoots or urgent "just-in-time deliveries"?
As a rule, these cases do not justify an exemption.
