Exemption from the seatbelt or helmet requirement

Anyone who is unable to wear a seatbelt or helmet for health reasons requires an exemption.

The application for exemption from wearing a seatbelt or helmet must be made in writing. You can find the necessary forms under "Forms & Links".

Prerequisites

  • Seat belts can only be removed if there are medical reasons for doing so and a doctor recommends removing the seat belt or if the rider is less than 1.50 metres tall.
  • Helmet exemptions are only possible if there are medical reasons and a doctor is in favour of helmet exemption.

Required documents

If you are sending the application by post:

  • Identity card or passport (copy)
  • Application (see under "Forms & Links", Appendix 1 and 2)
  • Medical certificate stating that an exemption from the seatbelt or helmet requirement is necessary for medical reasons (stating the exact duration, see "Forms & Links")

Note: Further documents may be required in individual cases. Please be sure to observe the information on the information sheet!

Please send the required documents to the following address: Kfz-Zulassungsbehörde, HA II/422, Zimmer 245, Eichstätter Str. 2, 80686 München.
