Exemption from dog tax - dog licence

If your dog has passed the test at a dog school, you can have it exempted from dog tax for the following year.

You can apply for exemption from the dog tax for the calendar year following the year of the test. You must submit the application by 31 December of the year following the examination.

Prerequisites

  • Your dog has successfully passed the test at a dog school or club.
  • You are applying for exemption for the dog in your household for the first time.
  • You have taken the dog licence voluntarily and without any legal obligation.
  • Your dog is not conspicuous in terms of safety.

An exemption is not possible for fighting dogs even if they have a negative certificate.

Required documents

  • informal application in which you also confirm that you have taken the test voluntarily and without obligation
  • Test confirmation from your dog school: The requirements for the theoretical and practical test as well as the necessary contents for the test confirmation are described in the dog tax statutes. Dog schools can use the sample examination certificate as a template. If required, additional examination documents can be requested from the issuing dog school or club.
  • Confirmation of your dog's safety clearance, to be applied for at tierschutz-tierseuchen.kvr@muenchen.de.

Negative certificate for fighting dogs

The keeping of category 1 fighting dogs is not permitted in Munich. You need a negative certificate for dogs with suspected fighting dog characteristics.

Waiver of dog tax - Financial emergency

If you live on unemployment benefit II, social welfare or a comparably low income, you can apply for a dog tax remission in some cases.

Deregistration of a dog

If your dog has died, you give it up or you move away from Munich, you must deregister your dog from the dog tax within two weeks.

Loss of or damage to the dog tax tag

If your dog's tax tag has been lost or damaged, you must apply for a replacement tag.
