Driving licence - extension

Anyone who already has a driving licence and wants to take a test for additional categories can apply for an extension of their driving licence.

Description

If you have passed your driving test for a car or motorbike, the Munich Traffic Watch offers a driving safety training course as part of the "Experts through experience" campaign for a fee. Everything you need to know about this and further information can be found on theVerkehrswachtwebsite.

You can submit your application for the extension of your driving licence Important:
Different requirements apply to the extension of a driving licence at 17 (accompanied driving), which are described in detail under the topic "Driving licence at 17".

Prerequisites

You are registered as having your main residence in Munich.

Required documents

For all driving licence classes:

  • Fully completed application form with all necessary documents
  • a colour copy of the page of your identity card, passport or foreign national passport showing your name, picture and ID number.
  • biometric passport photo
  • Confirmation from the driving school you are registered with
  • Copy of your current driving licence
  • only for old driving licences (grey or pink) that were not issued by the driving licence authority of the City of Munich: A copy of the index card, which you can request by telephone from the authority that issued your driving licence. From there, the file card copy should be sent directly to the driving licence authority in Munich.

For categories A, A2, A1, AM, B, BE, L, T:

  • Eye test certificate from an ophthalmologist or optician
  • Proof of training in "first aid" (not required if proof has already been submitted for a previous driving licence procedure). Please note that a certificate of attendance for immediate measures at the scene of an accident is not sufficient.

For the C classes:

  • Certificate of vision examination by an ophthalmologist or occupational physician (form available for download)
  • Certificate of medical examination for health suitability (form available for download)
  • Proof of training in "first aid" (not required if proof has already been submitted for a previous driving licence procedure)

For the D classes:

  • Certificate of vision examination by an ophthalmologist or occupational physician (form available for download)
  • Certificate of a medical fitness examination, either by an officially recognised examination centre for driving fitness or by a company/occupational physician
  • Proof of training in "first aid" (not required if the proof has already been submitted during a previous driving licence procedure)

Note on the period of validity of certificates:

Not older than one year at the time of application:

  • medical examination for health suitability
  • Examination of health suitability by an officially recognised examination centre for driving suitability or by a company/occupational physician

Not older than two years at the time of application:

  • Eye test by an ophthalmologist or optician
  • Examination of eyesight by an ophthalmologist or occupational physician

Without time limit:

  • Training in "first aid"

  • without a probationary period: 43.90 euros
  • with a probationary period: 44.70 euros
  • plus 13 euros only for D classes for applying for a certificate of good conduct

Conversion of EU/EEA driving licence

No transfer is necessary for driving licences from an EU or EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) without categories C, C1, C1E, CE, D, D1, D1E and DE.
