Driving licence - extension

Anyone who already has a driving licence and wants to take a test for additional categories can apply for an extension of their driving licence.

Course description

If you have passed your driving test for a car or motorbike, Munich's road safety organisation offers driver safety training for a fee as part of its "Experts through experience" campaign. Everything you need to know about this and further information can be found on the Verkehrswacht website.

Prerequisites

You are registered as having your main residence in Munich.

Required documents

For all categories of driving licence:

  • A fully completed application form with all the necessary documents
  • a colour copy of the page of your identity card, passport or foreign national identity card showing your name, photograph and identity number.
  • A biometric passport photo
  • Confirmation from the driving school where you are enrolled
  • A copy of your current driving licence
  • Only for old driving licences (grey or pink) that were not issued by the Driving Licence Authority of the City of Munich: a copy of your licence record, which you can request by telephone from the authority that issued your driving licence. The index card extract should be sent directly from there to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in Munich.

For categories A, A2, A1, AM, B, BE, L, T:

  • Certificate of an eye test from an ophthalmologist or optician
  • Proof of first aid training. Please note that a certificate of attendance for emergency measures at the scene of an accident is not sufficient.

For C licences:

  • Certificate confirming an eye test carried out by an ophthalmologist or an occupational health doctor (form available for download)
  • Certificate confirming a medical examination to assess fitness for driving (form available for download)
  • Proof of training in ‘First Aid’

For Class D licences:

  • Certificate confirming an eye test carried out by an ophthalmologist or an occupational health doctor (form available for download)
  • Certificate confirming a medical examination to assess fitness for work, either by an officially recognised medical centre for driver fitness or by an occupational health doctor
  • Proof of first aid training

Note on the validity period of certificates:

Must not be more than one year old at the time of application:

  • ​Medical examination to assess fitness for work
  • Medical examination to assess fitness for driving carried out by an officially recognised medical centre for driver fitness or by an occupational health doctor

Must not be more than two years old at the time of application:

  • ​Eye test carried out by an ophthalmologist or optician
  • Examination of eyesight by an ophthalmologist or an occupational health doctor

No time limit:

  • ​First aid training. Please note that a certificate of attendance for immediate measures at the scene of an accident is not sufficient; since 1 April 2015, 9 teaching units have been required.

Duration and costs

Processing time

The processing time is currently up to 14 weeks from the complete submission of your documents. This period also includes the production of the driving licence by Bundesdruckerei. For online applications, you will receive a confirmation of receipt and can track the status in your online account. For postal applications, you will receive an interim message with a processing number a few weeks after receipt.

Fees and charges

  • without setting a probationary period: 45.10 euros
  • with a probationary period: 45.90 euros
  • plus 13 euros only for D classes for applying for a certificate of good conduct

(Additional fees may apply for provisional driving licences or several driving licences for different categories)

Replacement driving licence - change of conditions and restrictions

If conditions and restrictions are changed or entered, or if the key number B96, B196, B197 is entered, you will need a replacement driving licence.

Transcript of the driving licence data

The file card transcript is a certificate of the driving licence data (driving licence class) that is registered about you with the driving licence authority.

Conversion of EU/EEA driving licence

No transfer is necessary for driving licences from an EU or EEA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) without categories C, C1, C1E, CE, D, D1, D1E and DE.

Exchange for card driving licence

If you would like to exchange your old paper driving licence for an EU card driving licence, you can apply for this in writing or online.

Exchange of a foreign driving licence

If you have changed your German driving licence to a foreign one and now live in Germany again, you must exchange your driving licence back.

Transfer of service driving licence

Anyone who has a service driving licence from the German armed forces, police or the Federal Border Guard can have this converted into a (civilian) driving licence.

Exchanging an open-ended driving licence

Permanent driving licences issued between 1999 and 2013 must be exchanged in stages by 19 January 2033 at the latest.
