Street performers require a permit to perform in Munich's pedestrian zone and other city centre areas.

Course description

Dear street performers,

Although the city and the local council generally welcome your performances in the pedestrian zone, experience in recent years has shown that the sheer number of performances is perceived as a nuisance by at least some local residents, shopkeepers and employees. It is therefore necessary to adhere to a few rules:

  • Street performers require a permit to perform in Munich’s pedestrian zone (see map) as well as in the areas of Schrammerstraße, Dienerstraße, Landschaftstraße, Sendlinger Straße and Tal.
  • The permit must be displayed in such a way that it can be seen at all times.
  • Street music and art are permitted within an area of up to 10 square metres.
  • Street performers are generally free to choose their own location, but must maintain a reasonable distance from market stalls and other street performers.
  • The performance spot must be changed after one hour at the latest. The subsequent performance spot must be at a sufficient distance from the previous one so that the performance can no longer be heard from there. Statues and street painters are exempt from this rule.
  • Each performance spot may only be occupied once per day, with the entire Marienplatz counting as a single performance spot.
  • In the event of any disruption or complaints, the performance spot must be changed immediately.
  • During the chimes at Marienplatz, the performance must be paused for 15 minutes.
  • Playing music in or from the arcades is not permitted.
  • The playing of recorded music and the use of amplifiers are not permitted.
  • Performances involving animals or those (involving fire, knives or similar items) that may pose a danger to spectators will not be authorised under any circumstances.

Prerequisites

  • All artists must present their performance at the City Information Centre before the first permit is issued.
  • Permits can only be collected in person and upon presentation of an identification document.

Duration and costs

Fees and charges

An administrative fee of 10 euros is charged for issuing the authorisation.
