Apply for/change red permanent licence plate for classic cars

Vintage vehicles that are deregistered can be given a permanent red licence plate. This allows certain journeys to be made (if justified).

Description

The following journeys may be carried out with this licence (if justified):

  • Participation in classic car events that serve to maintain the cultural heritage of motor vehicles
  • Travelling to and from classic car events
  • Test and transfer journeys
  • Journeys for the purpose of repair or maintenance

Prerequisites

  • You are registered as having your main residence in Munich.
  • For legal entities, commercial enterprises, traders:
    Munich is the place of business (head office or branch)
  • The vehicle was first registered at least 30 years ago.
  • A special vintage car certificate confirms that the vehicle is in good condition and largely corresponds to its original condition.
  • The vehicle is no longer in general use.
  • A journey log must be kept.
  • The vehicle must be decommissioned (deregistered).

Required documents

  • written, informal application (with justification of the need)
  • Identity card or passport
  • current certificate of good conduct or European certificate of good conduct for submission to an authority (document type OB!)
  • current information from the driving aptitude register
  • For legal entities, companies and associations: Extract from the commercial or association register (not older than 3 years from issue) and business registration
  • eVB number (electronic insurance confirmation)
  • SEPA mandate of the vehicle owner/account holder
  • Registration certificate part II (previously vehicle registration document) in the original
  • for vehicles without registration certificate part II: certificate of origin
  • Certificate of deregistration
  • Proof of ownership
  • Vintage car certificate in accordance with Section 23 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO)
  • for several vehicles: list of vehicles with vehicle data (vehicle type, vehicle ID no., date of first registration)

Changes to the vehicle inventory or personal data:

Please submit all previous red vehicle licences or the vehicle registration booklet and the driver's logbook

and, when registering a new vehicle, the relevant documents required for the vehicle.

If you have lost one (or both) licence plates or they have been stolen, you must report it to the registration office where your vehicle is registered.

For certain electric vehicles, you can apply for a so-called e-licence plate for electric vehicles.
