Enrolment

The main enrolment period for Year 5 at municipal and state Realschulen in Munich runs from 10 May to 14 May 2027.

All information and dates regarding school enrolment, taster lessons and parents’ information evenings can be found on the website of the respective school.

Enrolment at schools run by church organisations or other private bodies may differ from these dates. Please check with the relevant school or on the website of the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs.

Compulsory-elective subject groups

From Year 7 onwards, pupils are divided into the following educational streams, known as compulsory-choice subject groups:

Compulsory elective subject group 1

with a focus on mathematics, natural sciences and technology:

Intensive tuition in mathematics and physics. This is supplemented by the subject of information technology with CAD. This group is primarily aimed at pupils who wish to pursue a career in a technical or scientific field.

Compulsory elective subject group 2

with a focus on business and economics: Intensive teaching in business administration/accounting, economics, law and information technology. This group is primarily aimed at pupils who wish to work in business or administration.

Compulsory elective subject group 3a

with a focus on French as a second foreign language

Compulsory-elective subject group 3b

• with a focus on art
• or technical studies
• or social studies
• or Home Economics and Nutrition
• or Music

Requirements

• You can enrol your child if they are in Year 4 of primary school and will still be 11 years old on 30 September 2027. The school management will decide on any exceptions.
• If your child is transferring from a primary school, they should have an average mark of less than 2.66 in German, Maths, and local history and general studies.
• If your child wishes to transfer to a Realschule from Year 5 of a Hauptschule or Mittelschule, they should have an average mark of at least 2.5 in German and Maths.
• The school management will provide information on the admission requirements for pupils from a Gymnasium, Hauptschule or Mittelschule who wish to transfer to Year 6 or a higher year group at the Realschule during the parents’ information evenings.

Note on trial lessons:

• If your child does not meet the required average or has not yet received a recommendation for a secondary school, they may take part in a trial lesson.
• If your child has received a transfer certificate from primary school stating that they are eligible to attend a Realschule, the trial lessons are not necessary.
• The dates for the trial lessons for the Realschule are currently scheduled for the period from 1 June to 3 June 2027. During these lessons, your child will have to complete written tasks in German and mathematics. Their oral performance will also be assessed. If your child passes the trial lessons with a mark of at least 4, they may enrol at the Realschule. You can find out further details directly from the relevant school when you enrol your child.
• If your child is unwell on the scheduled date (a medical certificate from a GP or school doctor is required), they may take part in a resit at the end of the summer holidays.

Required documents

Enrolment can only be made by a parent or legal guardian or an authorised representative. The following original documents must be submitted:

• Birth certificate
• Original copy of school leaving certificate or half-year report card
• custody order, if applicable
• dyslexia certificates or attestations, if applicable
• Proof of measles immunisation or proof of immunity (in accordance with the Measles Protection Act)
