Travel document for refugees

If you are a refugee and have a residence permit, the Service Centre for Immigration and Naturalisation can issue you with a travel document.

Course description

The travel document for refugees can only be issued for the duration for which the residence title is valid. The travel document for refugees can be issued for a maximum of three years

Prerequisites

  • You are registered in Munich.
  • The decision of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees contains the wording "Refugee status is granted" or "Eligibility for asylum is recognised"
  • You have a valid residence title

Required documents

  • Fully completed application form for the issue of a travel document
  • current biometric passport photo, which is sent digitally by a certified photo studio or drugstore. Alternatively, you can use one of the photo terminals at the Immigration and Naturalisation Service Centre for a fee.

The documents submitted (such as proof of identity and language certificates) will be checked for authenticity. Further documents may be required in individual cases.

Please submit the required documents online or by post. After submitting your online application, you can download a completed document as a PDF for your records. Once we have checked your application, you will receive an appointment for a personal interview.

Duration and costs

Processing time

10 to 12 weeks

Questions about the processing status cannot be answered during this time.

We can only finalise your application if you have submitted all the required documents; if we have to request additional documents, this will delay the process.

Fees and charges

  • 70 euros (adults aged 24 and over)
  • 38 Euro (persons under 24 years)
  • 14 Euro (children up to 12 years)

If you are stateless, the Service Centre for Immigration and Naturalisation can issue you with a travel document for stateless persons in individual cases.

Residence permit – adolescents and young adults

Tolerated persons or holders of the right of residence between the ages of 14 and 26 can receive a residence permit if they have integrated well.

Apply for asylum

Foreigners who invoke the right of asylum (asylum seekers) must undergo a recognition procedure that is laid down in the Asylum Act.

Health counselling for refugees

We offer health counselling by specially trained staff in accommodation centres. Our employees come to the accommodation centres for this purpose.

Travel document for foreigners

If you do not have a passport or passport replacement, the Foreigners Office can issue you with a travel document for foreigners in individual cases.
