Deregistration of a dog

If your dog has died, you give it up or you move away from Munich, you must deregister your dog from the dog tax within two weeks.

Prerequisites

You must deregister your dog from the dog tax in the following cases:

  • Your dog has died.
  • You have given the dog to another person.
  • You have taken the dog to an animal shelter.
  • You move from Munich to another municipality.

Required documents

Send us the completed form "Deregistration of a dog" by e-mail, post or fax or bring it to us in person. Please enclose the following documents with the cancellation:

  • Death of the dog: Death certificate, e.g. euthanasia certificate from the vet
  • Surrender of the dog: Copy of the surrender contract
  • Delivery to the animal shelter: Delivery note from the animal shelter
  • Moving away from Munich: Registration confirmation of the new place of residence

To deregister your dog, you must also return your dog tax stamp. You can bring the stamp to us in person or send it to us by post.

Duration and costs

Processing time

The dog tax for the year of deregistration is calculated pro rata by month. You will receive a notification in which any outstanding or overpaid amounts will be shown. Please note that it can take up to three months to process your deregistration at busy times.

Personal appointments only by prior arrangement please. The payment counters of the city treasury are manned Monday to Wednesday at Landsberger Straße 36 during opening hours.

Waiver of dog tax - Financial emergency

If you live on unemployment benefit II, social welfare or a comparably low income, you can apply for a dog tax remission in some cases.

Negative certificate for fighting dogs

The keeping of category 1 fighting dogs is not permitted in Munich. You need a negative certificate for dogs with suspected fighting dog characteristics.

Incidents with dangerous dogs

All incidents involving dangerous dogs, such as "dog bites human" or "dog bites dog", should be reported immediately to the police or the district administration department.

If your dog's tax tag has been lost or damaged, you must apply for a replacement tag.

Exemption from dog tax - shelter dog

If your dog comes from the Munich animal shelter, you can have it exempted from dog tax for two years.

Exemption from dog tax - assistance dog

If you or your household members keep an assistance dog in accordance with the Assistance Dog Ordinance, you can apply for exemption from dog tax.

Exemption from dog tax - Special tasks

If you keep your dog for professional, commercial, public or charitable purposes, you can be exempt from dog tax.

Exemption from dog tax - dog licence

If your dog has passed the test at a dog school, you can have it exempted from dog tax for the following year.
