Munich Prize for New Drama
If you are a playwright, you can apply for a sponsorship award for new drama.
Course description
The Cultural Department of the City of Munich, Drei Masken Verlag and the Münchner Kammerspiele are awarding the International Edith and Werner Rieder Prize for New Drama. The prize money from the Edith-und-Werner-Rieder-Stiftung amounts to 20,000 euros.
Procedure
In the run-up to the awarding of the International Edith and Werner Rieder Prize for New Playwriting, a jury nominates up to five authors from among the applicants, who are invited to Munich for an author residency. This residency serves to develop a new writing project in dialogue with the Kammerspiele and ends with the award ceremony as part of the Long Night of New Drama at the Kammerspiele.
The Münchner Kammerspiele will present the plays nominated for the prize as part of workshop productions at the Long Night of New Drama. In the following season, they plan to première the play on which the prizewinner worked at the Residenz.
Prize money/options
The prize money for the International Edith and Werner Rieder Prize for New Drama is 20,000 euros. In addition, the residency will be endowed with 3,500 euros per author or nominated collective. The Münchner Kammerspiele will receive a time-limited première option on all plays nominated for the prize. In addition, accommodation in Munich will be provided for the nominated candidates. Drei Masken Verlag offers the prizewinners the opportunity to join the publishing house. The award ceremony takes place in June at a Long Night of New Drama at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
The prize is awarded every two years. The next competition will take place in 2026.

The prize is aimed at artists at the beginning of their career who have had no more than two works performed in the theatre and who are not yet represented by a theatre publisher in German-speaking countries.
