Exemption from dog tax - assistance dog

If you are dependent on the assistance of a dog due to a severe disability, you can apply for an exemption from the dog tax.

Prerequisites

  • You are blind, deaf, hard of hearing or completely helpless.
  • Keeping a dog is medically indispensable for you. A merely useful or beneficial aspect of keeping a dog is not sufficient, even if this is certified by a doctor.
  • Your dog is suitable for use as an assistance dog.

Required documents

We will be happy to advise you before you submit your application as to whether an exemption is possible in your case and which documents you need to submit. As a rule, we require the following documents:

  • informal letter of application with details of the type of disability
  • a medical certificate confirming that your dog has a direct and significant impact on your disability or provides essential assistance that directly alleviates the disadvantages of the specific disability in question

Please also state your telephone number in the application letter so that any queries can be clarified quickly.
