Stay for medical treatment - embassy patients
Critically ill patients from abroad who are cared for by their embassies or for whom the home country bears the costs can apply for a stay.
Description
Patients from third countries who are cared for by their foreign embassies or for whom the home country bears the costs of treatment and living expenses, as well as their carers, can apply for the permit.
Visa procedure:
In many cases, you will need a valid national visa (type D). The visa is issued either by the German diplomatic mission or the Foreigners Office. A Schengen visa (type C) can only be extended as a national visa (type D) under certain conditions.
Prerequisites
- The necessary medical treatment in Germany may only last as long as the visa (type D) issued for this purpose is valid.
- During medical treatment, your main place of residence must be in Munich. This also applies to outpatient treatment that takes place outside the city area.
Required documents
Please note: The decision to issue a residence permit is only made on the basis of the documents submitted. We therefore ask you to submit the above-mentioned documents up to date, clearly arranged, meaningful and complete without being asked.
Specialist medical certificate:
The medical specialist must provide generally understandable information on the diagnosis in the certificate.
Information on the duration and type of treatment required is also required (e.g. therapy plan, planned rehabilitation measures).
Secured livelihood (possible proof):
Declaration of assumption of the costs of treatment and living expenses of the country of origin, or of the foreign representation for you and your companion.
Bank statement (German or English) if not all costs are covered by the country of origin.
Declaration of commitment:
You will need a declaration of commitment if not all costs for you and your companion are covered by your home country and you cannot provide evidence of sufficient assets of your own.
Travel health insurance:
If there is no declaration of assumption of costs from your country of origin, your companion will need German/European or German-recognised travel health insurance.
Power of attorney/sub-authorisation and identity document:
A general power of attorney or note verbale is sufficient.
Please note:
Unless expressly stated otherwise by the authorities, only copies of the documents must be submitted. Please note that submitted documents cannot be returned.
We will treat the documents you submit in strict confidence.
You must bring the following documents with you to the interview/appointment:
- fully completed application form
- valid passport or passport replacement
- Biometric passport photo (you will find photo machines at the Foreigners Office)
Questions & Answers
In the case of inpatient medical treatment, the hospital/rehabilitation centre must be in the city of Munich. If the specialist medical care (e.g. examinations) takes place in Munich and you have to temporarily stay outside of Munich for treatment (e.g. the operation in Munich and the rehabilitation outside of Munich), then the Munich Foreigners Office is still responsible for you.
If you are treated exclusively outside of Munich and there is no medical connection to Munich, the Munich Foreigners Office is not responsible for you. This also applies to persons accompanying you, even if they are staying in Munich. We can support you in individual cases.
