Interchangeable licence plate
You can register two vehicles with one interchangeable licence plate in Munich.
Description
The interchangeable licence plate consists of two parts - the common licence plate part and the vehicle-specific licence plate part permanently attached to each vehicle.
The common licence plate part is interchangeable and is attached to the respective vehicle that is to be moved.
The identification numbers of an interchangeable licence plate are identical except for the last digit. The last digit of the vehicle's identification number is applied to the vehicle-related part of the licence plate. The remaining part of the identification number of the variable licence plate is applied to the interchangeable part.
The allocation of an interchangeable licence plate for both vehicles is only possible within a block of ten (0 to 9) for the last digits of the identification number. Both vehicles therefore each have their own licence plate number, which differs only in the last digit. For example, M - MM 1311 and M - MM 1315.
Vehicles of different classes (e.g. a car and a motorbike) may not be combined. The interchangeable licence plate is also not approved for lorries or tractors.
Interchangeable licence plates cannot be issued as seasonal licence plates, red licence plates, short-term licence plates, green licence plates or export licence plates. However, one or both vehicles can be classic cars.
However, the interchangeable licence plate may only be used on one of the two vehicles at any one time.
Prerequisites
The vehicles must fall into the same vehicle category and it must be possible to use the licence plates with the same dimensions on the vehicles. For example, two cars or two motorbikes, or two light trailers, but not two vehicles of different classes, e.g. a car and a motorbike.

Questions & Answers
They can be an alternative to seasonal licence plates and allow you to use your motorhome or classic car for an unrestricted period of time - for example, even in the winter months.
As the temporary licence plate may only be used on one of two vehicles at the same time, it can be used as a criterion by insurers when calculating the premium for motor vehicle liability insurance. You can obtain information on this from your insurance company.
