Keeping dangerous animals

Anyone wishing to keep a dangerous animal of a wild species in the city area requires a licence from the district administration department.

Description

You need suitable premises for keeping animals. As a rule, the municipal veterinary office for the City of Munich checks the conditions on site during a site inspection before the KVR issues the final licence to keep animals.

You should submit the so-called application for keeping a dangerous animal before you acquire and keep such an animal.

Prerequisites

However, certain requirements must be met from a factual and personal point of view:

  • Personal reliability: You must be able to guarantee that you are personally suitable in the public and neighbourhood interest and that there is no danger to life, health, property or possessions. For this reason, a certificate of good conduct must be submitted. In addition, in cases where private individuals apply for a licence, you must be physically fit.
  • Legitimate interest: You must provide evidence of a justified interest in keeping a dangerous animal. There must be scientific, animal welfare, species conservation or other important reasons for this. A mere hobby is not sufficient.
  • Expertise and specialist knowledge: You must prove that you have the necessary knowledge to keep the animal.
  • Special liability insurance: In order to obtain the licence, you must provide proof of appropriate liability insurance. This must cover any damage that may occur when keeping the animal(s). This should be explicitly recognisable in the certificate from the insurance company.
