Holiday travel ban - exemption authorisation

In summer, there is a driving ban for HGVs on some motorways and main roads on Saturdays. In individual cases, you can apply for an exemption from this ban.

Description

From 1 July to 31 August, there is a driving ban on Saturdays between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on certain motorways and main roads for trucks over 7.5 tonnes and for all trucks with trailers transporting goods for commercial purposes. Under certain conditions, you can apply for a special permit for your lorry.

Prerequisites

Exceptions are possible if the transport is urgent and in the public interest(e.g. to maintain public supply facilities). The exemption authorisation for the laden journey includes necessary empty journeys.

  • Munich is your place of residence or registered office of the company/branch office
  • or the goods are loaded in Munich

Required documents

  • Fully completed application form
  • Proof that an alternative route is not reasonable and that the motorway affected by the driving ban must be used. Economic or competitive reasons do not justify an exemption.
  • Proof of urgency and public interest.
  • Further documents may be required in individual cases.

Duration & Costs

Fees

50 to 170 euros (depending on the cost, duration or scope of the authorisation)

Questions & Answers

Are there cases that are generally exempt from the driving ban?
Yes.

Typical examples are
  • Transport of fresh milk, fresh meat, fresh fish and perishable fruit or vegetables
  • Transport of agricultural products during the harvest season. This refers to products that are still in their original state, i.e. have not already been processed (e.g. cereal grains, but not flour)
  • Caravan trailers and trailers towed behind lorries with a maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 tonnes for sports and leisure purposes
  • Emergency journeys by recovery, towing and repair vehicles (including empty journeys to or from emergency sites)
  • Vehicles in which the transported objects are part of the inventory, such as exhibition, film and television vehicles as well as fairground vehicles
  • Self-propelled work machines (e.g. mobile cranes)

Can the exemption authorisation be transferred to other vehicles?
No.

Which motorways and federal roads are covered by the driving ban?
You can find information on this in our application form or in Section 1 of the Holiday Travel Ordinance.

What requirements apply to branch offices?
This must be entered in the commercial, co-operative or partnership register. A branch office is a physically separate part of the company that participates independently in legal transactions as an organisational unit and where employees work partly dependent on the main branch and partly independently of it.

There are general exceptions to the driving ban in the Holiday Travel Ordinance. In these cases, you do not require an exemption licence. For individual information, you can contact us directly (see "Contact").

Some typical examples are listed here:

  • Transport of fresh milk, fresh meat, fresh fish and perishable fruit or vegetables
  • Caravan trailers and trailers towed behind lorries with a maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 tonnes for sports and leisure purposes
  • Emergency journeys by recovery, towing and repair vehicles (including empty journeys to or from emergency sites)
  • Tractors used exclusively to tow other vehicles as well as tractors and articulated lorries with an auxiliary loading area whose payload is not more than 0.4 times the maximum authorised mass
  • Vehicles in which the transported objects are part of the inventory, such as exhibition, film and television vehicles as well as showmen's vehicles
  • self-propelled work machines (e.g. mobile cranes)
