Rent subsidies for art studios

If you are a visual artist, the City of Munich will provide you with financial support for rented studio space.

Course description

General information

Since 2008, the City of Munich's Department of Culture has regularly awarded studio rental grants to visual artists as part of its studio funding programme. This support is provided over a fixed funding period of three years and is aimed in particular at professional visual artists who are at the beginning of their careers, with the opportunity to reapply after the end of the funding period. Please note that the rent subsidy can only be awarded twice per artist for a total of three years, and is awarded through a comprehensive jury process, with the final decision being made by the City Council's Culture Committee based on the jury's recommendations.

Subsidy amounts

the rent subsidy is paid monthly over the funding period of three years, provided that the tenancy agreement remains in place during this time. The amount of the rent subsidy for a work studio is based on the actual size of the rented usable space (according to the rental agreement) and is calculated according to the following scheme:

  • up to 17 square metres: 98 euros per month
  • up to 33 square metres: 145 euros per month
  • up to 50 square metres: 194 euros per month
  • up to 67 square metres: 240 euros per month
  • over 67 square metres: 290 euros per month

It is also possible to subsidise a studio space within a residential studio. For this, the rental agreement must clearly state that it is a residential studio and the proportionate size of the studio space must be specified separately.
