Change of address for identity card, passport, eAT

If you move within Munich, move to Munich or your address has changed, you should have the address changed in your identity documents.

Description

it is advisable to change the address on all identity documents at the same time as registering.

If you move house, you should have the address on your ID card and electronic residence permit updated. The new address is affixed to an address sticker on the back of the ID card.

In the case of an identity card in cheque card format and the electronic residence permit, the new address is also updated on the identity card chip.

Only the place of residence is shown in the passport. If you move to another municipality, you should have this updated in your passport.

Required documents

  • Identity card and/or passport
  • electronic residence permit (eAT) together with the valid passport or passport replacement
  • Change of address in the vehicle documents
    • If you are moving within Munich and have a vehicle, please bring the registration certificate part I (formerly vehicle registration certificate) and the test report or entry in the vehicle registration certificate regarding a valid general inspection.
    • If you are moving to Munich and want to re-register a vehicle, please note the information from the vehicle registration authority: " Vehicle re-registration - from outside Munich"

Register or re-register your place of residence

If you move to Munich, you must register as soon as possible - even if you are re-registering within the city. The law stipulates 14 days.

Register or re-register residence - Family

If you are moving to Munich as a family, you must register within 14 days - even if you are moving within the city.

Name change on driving licence

After a name change, we recommend exchanging the driving licence (especially when travelling abroad), but it is not mandatory.

Deregister residence

If you move abroad, give up a secondary residence or no longer have a permanent residence, you must deregister.

Name change in the vehicle documents

If the name of the person or the company name to which a vehicle is registered changes, this must be entered in the vehicle documents.

Change personal data in the population register

Your personal details have changed following a marriage, divorce or change of name abroad. You must have this entered in the register of residents.
