Counselling on notifiable infections

To protect the people of Munich from the spread of notifiable infectious diseases, the Department of Health offers comprehensive advice and information.

Course description

The Health Department provides information and advice to Munich residents on the risks of infection, as well as on hygiene and protective measures relating to notifiable infectious diseases.

Under the Infection Protection Act (IfSG), there is a legal obligation to report many diseases and pathogens. It is, for example, medical practices, laboratories and childcare centres that are obliged to report these to the Public Health Department, not the patients themselves.Notifiable diseases include, amongst others, gastrointestinal infections caused by viruses such as noroviruses and rotaviruses, or bacteria such as Salmonella, Campylobacter and EHEC. Further examples of notifiable infectious diseases include influenza, COVID-19, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and diseases such as measles, meningococcal meningitis, chickenpox and whooping cough.

In this context, the Health Department offers the following services:

  • Advice for Munich residents
  • Advice for community facilities on notifiable diseases in accordance with Section 34 of the IfSG
  • Advice for medical facilities such as doctors’ surgeries and hospitals
  • Advice for residential care homes for the elderly and nursing homes on any necessary hygiene measures in the event of illness

Depending on the disease or pathogen, the Department of Health may, upon receipt of a notification, contact those affected to explain the disease and possible routes of transmission, and to provide information on any further necessary measures.
