Second passport, other passports

As a rule, you may only hold one valid German passport. For an exception (second passport, several passports) you must prove your legitimate interest.

Description

As a rule, you may not hold more than one valid passport issued by the Federal Republic of Germany. For an exception to be made, you must be able to provide concrete proof or credible evidence of a legitimate interest in a second passport or several passports. Each individual case is carefully scrutinised. Exceptions are handled very restrictively.

Another passport is valid for 6 years.

Express order:
A so-called express passport can also be ordered from the Bundesdruckerei. The processing time (application to delivery) is about six working days and costs 32 euros in addition to the fee.

Appointment
You must make an appointment for your visit using the contact form. Each individual case will be carefully examined. Exceptions are handled very restrictively.

Note on passport photos
There are currently no photo booths available on site. Please bring your photo with you to your appointment.

Required documents

  • Informal written application with detailed, well-founded justification and supporting documents (e.g. company letter from the employer stating the countries and dates of travel; booking confirmations for flights/hotels; letter of invitation; correspondence)
  • current biometric passport photo
    • Please note: There are currently no photo booths available on site. Please bring your photo to the appointment!

Important:
In cases of doubt, further documents and proof may be required (e.g. current civil status certificates, proof of German citizenship). In these cases, you may have to come by again in person.

Duration & Costs

Processing time

  • six to seven weeks
  • six working days (for express orders)
  • the temporary passport is issued immediately

Notes on collection:

  • You can check the processing status of your passport online.
  • You will need a pre-booked appointment to collect your passport.
  • You can collect your passport in person or by an authorised representative with a written power of attorney (available for download). Parents of underage children do not need an authorisation to collect their passport. Minors cannot collect their passports themselves, but only together with a legal guardian. You have the option of engaging an authorised service provider of your choice to collect your passport.
  • Sending the passport by post is not yet permitted.

  • Under 24 years: 37.50 euros
  • Over 24 years: 70 Euro
  • temporary passport: 26 Euro
  • Frequent travellers (passport with 48 pages): Fee plus 22 Euro surcharge
  • Express order: fee plus 32 Euro surcharge

If you urgently need the additional passport and even the express order takes too long, you can apply for a temporary passport, which you can take with you immediately.

- The temporary passport is valid for one year.

- You must prove or credibly demonstrate that you urgently need the temporary passport.

- You can obtain details on the travel modalities of individual countries from the Federal Foreign Office, your travel agent or the embassy of the country in question. They will provide you with up-to-date information on whether a temporary passport is accepted for entry.
