Qualification as a childminder

If you want to work in child day care, you must complete a preparatory qualification. Afterwards, an accompanying qualification is recommended.

Description

After attending an information event and the start of the assessment procedure by the City Youth Welfare Office, you can take part in a preparatory training programme.
Your registration for the qualification at the training provider is only valid once the social education specialist responsible for you at the Sozialbürgerhaus or the Stadtjugendamt has confirmed your suitability for the qualification to the training provider.

Upon successful completion, you will receive the "Qualified Child Day Carer" certificate from the Bundesverband für Kindertagespflege e.V. (Federal Association for Child Day Care).

If you are already working as a childminder and are currently looking after children, you can complete further training and obtain the certificate "Qualified childminder according to the competence-orientated qualification manual after 150 teaching units of in-service training".

Prerequisites

For the preparatory qualification (Part I):

  • Enjoy caring for children
  • Residence in Munich
  • At least secondary school leaving certificate or completed vocational training
  • Good knowledge of German (at least level B2)
  • Attendance at an information event
  • Initial interviews with the socio-educational specialists at the Stadtjugendamt/Sozialbürgerhaus
  • Please note: Your registration with the training provider for the qualification is only valid once the socio-educational specialist responsible for you at the Sozialbürgerhaus
    or at the municipal youth welfare centre has confirmed your suitability for the qualification to the training provider.

For the in-service qualification (Part II):

  • Successful completion of a qualification according to the DJI curriculum or according to the Quality Manual (QHB) with at least 173 teaching units or completed vocational training recognised by the municipal youth welfare office as a pedagogical specialist.

Duration & Costs

Processing time

  • The preparatory qualification comprises 173 teaching units of 45 minutes each. In addition, there are self-study units totalling 100 teaching units. An internship totalling 80 hours is also part of the course.
  • The in-service qualification comprises 150 teaching units. In addition, there are self-study units totalling 40 teaching units.
