Citizens from an EU country (except Germany) or Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein can apply for an eID card.
Description
The eID card in cheque card format is valid for 10 years. It does not contain a photograph or signature. The eID card contains a data chip with the personal data and address. It is intended exclusively for online use and cannot be used as an ID or travel document.
If you are visually impaired, you can obtain a transparent sticker with the Braille characters "ad" (for identity document) for your e-ID card. You can order it from us when you apply for or collect your e-ID card. You can also obtain the Braille sticker at any time at a later date. To do this, call the Citizens Office service hotline on 089/ 233-96000 or use our contact form.

No. The "PIN reset letter" online service offered by Bundesdruckerei GmbH was discontinued on 29 December 2023. To reset your PIN, you must go to a Citizens Office in person with your eID card.
