Temporary passport

If you need a passport immediately and even the express procedure would take too long, you can apply for a temporary passport in urgent cases.

Description

  • When crossing national borders, it is generally necessary to carry an identity document. Whether a passport is required is regulated by law in different countries.
  • However, when travelling within the European Union and to most holiday destinations, it is sufficient for Germans to present their identity card or children's passport.
  • You can obtain details of the travel regulations for individual countries from the Federal Foreign Office, your travel agent or the embassy of the country in question. They will provide you with up-to-date information on whether a temporary passport is accepted for entry.

This machine-readable passport (without the chip with biometric data) is valid for one year.

You can apply for a temporary passport at any Citizens Office in the city. You can take the identity document with you immediately.

Prerequisites

You must prove or credibly demonstrate that you urgently need the temporary passport.

Required documents

  • Current biometric photo
  • Identity documents (identity card, passport, child's passport or child's identity card as proof of identity - if available)
  • For under 18-year-olds: Identity card or passport of all custodial persons
  • If required: Declaration of consent from the absent parent (available for download)
  • Important: In cases of doubt, the passport authority may request further documents (e.g. custody orders, current civil status certificates, proof of German citizenship). In these cases, you may have to come by again in person.
