Residence permit - civil servants

If you work as a civil servant for a German employer, you will be issued a residence permit to fulfil your official duties.

Description

In particular, university lecturers and other academic and artistic staff who have been appointed as civil servants can obtain a residence permit. If you receive a residence permit for the purpose of performing official duties at a German office, you have the opportunity to obtain a permanent right of residence ( settlement permit) after just three years.

Visa procedure:

If you belong to a third country ( not the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland), you generally need a visa to enter the country for the purpose of employment, which must be applied for at the German diplomatic mission abroad.

The visa is not required for citizens of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America.

After entering the country:
You must first register your residency at the Citizens Office.

Application for residence permit:
Before your visa/residence permit expires, you must apply for a residence permit. If you can enter the country without a visa, you must submit the application within 90 days of your arrival.

Please submit the application form and the required documents online or by post. After we have checked your application, you will receive an appointment for a personal interview.
Period of validity:
The residence permit is valid for a maximum of three years. If the employment relationship is limited to a shorter period, the residence permit is only valid for this period.

Prerequisites

  • You are registered in Munich
  • You are employed as a civil servant by a German employer

Required documents

  • Fully completed application form
  • Valid passport or passport substitute
  • A recent biometric passport photo(photo booths are also available at the Foreigners Office)
  • Valid visa for entry
  • Proof of health insurance (insurance policy from a private health insurance company with details of the type and scope of insurance).
    • Please note: The health insurance cover must correspond to the type and scope of statutory health insurance. It must not contain any major exclusions of benefits. In the event of illness, no higher deductible than 300 euros per year may be demanded for the insured benefits. The health insurance cover may not contain a limit on the costs to be reimbursed in the event of illness or an expiry or cancellation clause with regard to a certain age.
  • Proof of civil servant status (certificate of appointment as a civil servant with a German employer)
  • Confirmation of employment (please have your employer fill out the Declaration of Employment form).
  • Proof of the current monthly costs for the flat
    • For rented flats, a current confirmation from the landlord or bank statements showing the rent amount
    • for owner-occupied flats, proof of loan instalments and monthly housing benefit.
  • For minors: Written declaration of consent from the person authorised to take care of the person (parents)
