eID card (EU/EEA)

Citizens from an EU country (except Germany) or Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein can apply for an eID card.

Description

The eID card in cheque card format is valid for 10 years. It does not contain a photograph or signature. The eID card contains a data chip with the personal data and address. It is intended exclusively for online use and cannot be used as an ID or travel document.

If you are visually impaired, you can obtain a transparent sticker with the Braille characters "ad" (for identity document) for your e-ID card. You can order it from us when you apply for or collect your e-ID card. You can also obtain the Braille sticker at any time at a later date.   • You are older than 16 years.
  • You are from an EU country or Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein.
  • You are registered as having your main residence in Munich.

Notes on collection

You can check the processing status of your eID card online. You will need a pre-booked appointment to collect your card.

The card can be handed over to you personally or to a person authorised in writing (power of attorney available for download). Legal guardians also require a corresponding authorisation from the applicant if they are 16 years old.

You also have the option of engaging an authorised service company of your choice to collect the documents.

The online ID function of the eID card gives you access to digital German administrative services and you can use it to identify yourself on the Internet and at vending machines/self-service terminals.

This makes it easier for you to communicate with online shops, banks, insurance companies, public authorities, social networks and companies and legitimise yourself accordingly.

No. The "PIN reset letter" online service offered by Bundesdruckerei GmbH was discontinued on 29 December 2023. To reset your PIN, you must go to a Citizens Office in person with your eID card.

Yes, if you move house, the address on the chip of the eID card must be changed. To do this, the original eID card must be presented at a Citizens Office.
