Transfer of the residence permit to the new passport

If you have received a new passport, you must also apply for a new electronic residence permit.

Do you have a new passport and want to travel abroad?

  • Your settlement permit or EU permanent residence permit is still valid in Germany even if your previous passport has expired and you have already received a new passport. To re-enter the country, you only need to show your old and new passport and your previous settlement permit at many border controls. Before travelling to another country, however, we recommend that you find out about the entry formalities or contact the embassy/consulate of the country in question in good time before leaving the country.
  • Your temporary residence permit ends at the latest when your passport expires. If you have not yet received an extension of your residence permit, you will need a fictitious certificate. When travelling abroad, carry all documents that prove your right of residence in Germany. This also applies when travelling to another Schengen state.

Foreign nationals who have received a new passport and in their previous, but expired passport

  • a settlement permit
  • an unlimited residence permit
  • a residence authorisation
  • or a permanent residence permit-EG

do not have to apply for an electronic residence permit (eAT) immediately, as the residence permit in their previous passport remains valid.

It is also possible to re-enter Germany without an electronic residence permit.
You can enter the country if you present your old and new passports.

Before travelling to third countries, however, we recommend that you contact the respective state representation in Germany in good time before leaving the country, as the Foreigners Office cannot make any binding statements about the practices of foreign authorities.
