Auction business - apply for a licence

Anyone wishing to auction off third-party movable property, land and rights on a commercial basis requires a licence.

Description

Dates for auctions must be announced to the trade authority at least two weeks in advance.

In principle, only used items may be auctioned. The provisions of the Auctioneers Ordinance apply to the organisation of auctions.

In addition, there are fees for registering or re-registering the business.

Questions & Answers

Internet auctions do not require a licence.

In the event of a criminal record, disorderly financial circumstances or other serious negative findings about the applicant, a licence may be refused.

In the case of non-German nationals (especially those from outside the EU), the provisions of immigration law must be observed when taking up self-employment. Information can be obtained from the Foreigners Office.
