Flying lanterns, tea lights and balloons

You may release up to 500 balloons without authorisation. It is forbidden to release lanterns or tea lights throughout Bavaria.

Description

Balloons may also be released in large quantities in the Munich city area. Up to 500 balloons you do not need a permit, for more than 500 balloons you must apply for a mass ascent of balloons at the German Air Traffic Control.

It is forbidden to release lanterns or tea lights in Munich, as in the whole of Bavaria.

Anyone who nevertheless releases unmanned sky balloons, also known as sky lanterns, sky balloons, flying lanterns and the like, faces fines of up to 1,000 euros.

Free-flying, unmanned hot-air balloons are uncontrollable, mobile, open fireplaces. We therefore expressly point out that, from a technical point of view, there are concerns about fire safety in the vicinity of flying balloons or uncontrollably landing balloons.

As a rule, the Munich District Administration Office does not grant an exemption in accordance with § 25 VVB, as the landing site of the sky balloons cannot be defined.
In the case of controllable hot-air balloons (similar to a model aeroplane), a possible exception must be agreed with the fire department.
