BAföG - Secondary school from grade 10

Are you attending secondary school from year 10 and would like to apply for educational support?

Description

If you are attending the 10th grade of a secondary school, you may be eligible for educational support (BAföG).

If you live with your parents, there is no entitlement.

If you do not live with your parents, the basic needs amount to a maximum of 666 euros per month.

Prerequisites

  • You must be attending the 10th grade of a secondary school,
  • you do not live with your parents or one of your parents and the
  • journey to the intended training centre is more than 2 hours (outward and return journey combined) from the residence of your parents or one of your parents, or you
  • run your own household and are married or in a civil partnership,
  • or you
  • run your own household and were married or in a civil partnership,
  • or you
  • run your own household and live with at least one child.

If you are not covered by family health and long-term care insurance (proof required!), this amount may increase.

Your parents' income is taken into account in the calculation.

Required documents

You must present the following documents:

  • Copy of passport as an EU citizen or residence permit as a non-EU citizen
  • Form 1 (application for educational support, curriculum vitae: please fill out without gaps and to the month from the end of primary school)
  • Form 2 (school certificate): completed by your school
  • Certificate of your health and long-term care insurance (if you do not have family insurance)
  • Copy of your tenancy agreement
  • Form 3 (declaration of income from your parents and, if applicable, spouse or partner): from both parents and, if applicable, spouse or partner based on their income from the calendar year before last
  • Income tax assessment notice(s) of both parents and, if applicable, spouse or partner from the calendar year before last
  • School or study certificate or training contract from your siblings (if applicable to you)

Duration & Costs

Processing time

The processing time varies from case to case.
Please submit your application at least four months before the start of the school year.
Funding can be granted for the holiday month of August if you submit your application by 31 August at the latest and you also attended a school eligible for funding in the previous school year. Please submit a school certificate for the previous school year as proof.
