Rent subsidies for art studios

If you are a visual artist, the City of Munich will provide you with financial support for rented studio space.

Description

General information

Since 2008, the City of Munich has regularly awarded rent subsidies to visual artists (preferably at the "beginning of professionalism") over a fixed funding period of three years as part of its studio funding programme.

It is possible to reapply, but the rent subsidy can only be awarded twice per artist for a total of three years.

In the interests of broadening and opening up the concept of art, artists from fields at the interface with applied art and architecture can also apply for a studio rental grant.

Subsidy amounts

The amount of the subsidy is based on the actual size of the rented usable space of the studio or studio space (according to the rental agreement) according to the following scheme:

  • up to 17 square metres: 98 euros per month
  • up to 33 square metres: 145 euros per month
  • up to 50 square metres: 194 euros per month
  • up to 67 square metres: 240 euros per month
  • over 67 square metres: 290 euros per month

In principle, it is also possible to subsidise a studio space within a residential studio, provided that this is listed separately as such in the rental agreement, stating the size of the studio space or workshop.

The next call for applications for the funding period from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2029 will take place in winter 2025/2026.

Applications will not be accepted until then.

Prerequisites

All visual artists who have their rented studio in the Munich city area can apply for a studio rental subsidy. The applicant's place of residence must be in the S-Bahn area. The studio rent subsidy is limited to a total of two three-year funding periods per artist. The net rent of the studio may not exceed 16 euros per square metre.

The city council decides on the allocation of the grant based on the recommendation of an expert jury.

Required documents

The application must include

  1. the completed application form
  2. a current artistic CV(training, exhibition activities/projects, public commissions, prizes, scholarships, relevant association activities, etc.)
  3. a digital portfolio of your artistic work with meaningful, dated and current examples of your work (not older than five years; videos as a link)
  4. Copy of the studio rental contract including details of the studio size and the basic rent

Legal basis

Decision

All timely, formally correct and complete applications are submitted to the expert jury convened by the City Council. It selects applicants according to artistic quality criteria and recommends them to the City Council.

You will receive written notification shortly after the jury process has been completed and the City Council has made its decision in the Culture Committee. Please refrain from making further enquiries.
