Residence registration with change of vehicle documents

Description

Registration deadline:

You must register your new place of residence within two weeks. Otherwise you will be committing an offence and will have to expect a fine.

Exceptions to the obligation to register:

As long as you are currently registered in Germany and are moving into another flat for a stay of no longer than six months, you do not have to register for this flat.

If you otherwise live abroad and are not registered in Germany, you are only obliged to register (within the two-week period) after three months have passed.

If you are currently registered in Germany and are admitted to a hospital, nursing home or other facility that provides care for people in need of care or disabled people, you do not have to register. If you are not registered in Germany and your stay exceeds three months, you must register within two weeks.

Prerequisites

• You do not need to deregister at your previous place of residence. This is done automatically when you register in Munich.
• If you have more than one home in Germany: You must specify where your main residence is by completing the "Supplement to registration for more than one home". Please also note the information on the "Declaration of residence" page.
• For families: Spouses, registered partners, parents and their children can use one registration form for the joint residence. If there are more than four people, an additional form must be used. The signature of one person (aged 16 or over) who is required to register is sufficient for each form.
• If there is more than one person: Each person must complete and sign a separate form.
• For minors up to the age of 16: The person whose home the minor is moving into must sign the form.
• In the case of guardians: If the guardian can determine the residence and a reservation of consent has been ordered for the person under guardianship, the guardian must complete and sign the form and provide proof of his or her power of attorney.

Required documents

• Registration form
• Valid identification document of one of the persons required to register
• Confirmation from the landlord/owner that the person has moved into the flat. The submission of a confirmation in self-written form is only sufficient if it contains all the necessary information: Address of the flat, full name and address of the landlord (if the landlord is not also the owner of the flat, the name of the owner must also be stated), date of moving in or start of the tenancy
• The names of all persons required to register
• if Munich is the main place of residence: bring your identity card (the new address will be entered there)
• if you have several flats: also fill in the "Supplement for several flats"

if you are moving within Munich and have a vehicle:

• For the change of address in the vehicle documents, please bring the registration certificate part I (previously vehicle registration document) and the test report or entry in the vehicle registration document regarding a valid general inspection.

if you are moving to Munich and want to re-register a vehicle:

• Please refer to the information provided by the vehicle registration authority ("Vehicle re-registration from outside Munich").
• if you want to complete another registration process with the registration/re-registration: Please refer to the information provided by the vehicle registration authority, in particular the information on the limited range of registration services offered by the Citizens' Registration Office.

if you have the registration carried out by a person authorised by you:

• Fully completed registration form (available to download or to buy in stationery shops), a passport or identity document of the authorised person Identity documents of all persons who are being registered or re-registered

if you come in person and do not have a completed registration form with you, we can prepare a pre-filled registration form. The pre-filled registration form is a procedure for electronically requesting registration data from the previous registration authority. This means that your own registration data is provided by the previous registration authority in an automated process, making data entry unnecessary.
