Seven blue-chip companies base their operations in and around Munich – the highest figure of any German city. Twice a year, the new DAX index lists the 40 biggest companies that post the highest revenues and are traded on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

As a rule, DAX newcomers have to provide reliable data about having been profitable during the previous two fiscal years.

DAX 40

DAX-listed companies headquartered in Munich currently include Allianz, BMW, Munich Re, Siemens and Siemens Energy as well as MTU Aero Engines. In addition, Infineon Technologies based in Neubiberg operate within the wider Munich district. With the reform, there are now more DAX companies in other German cities, but Munich is still the German city with the most DAX companies.

MDAX

The Bavarian capital has its much-vaunted Munich mix to thank for the fact that so many big players are backed up by a good number of medium-sized listed companies too. Nine of the 50 companies are currently listed on the MDAX index of medium-sized firms.

TecDAX and SDAX

The technology-focused TecDAX index currently lists six companies based at Munich's high-tech hub. This again constitutes the heaviest concentration of any German city among the 30 listed firms. The Bavarian capital's consistency and attraction also extends to the small-cap SDAX index (70 companies) which by now boasts 13 locally based companies.

From time to time, Deutsche Börse (German stock exchange) decides which companies are to be listed in the DAX 40, MDAX, SDAX and TecDAX indices.
