(March 30, 2021) The Department of Labor and Economic Development has published the 2021 version of “Munich. The Business Location. Facts and Figures”. Every spring, this publication provides a concise overview of key data for the local economy.

Available in English and German, the brochure highlights the most important data and information documenting economic development in and around Munich.

Munich. The Business Location. Facts and Figures 2021 (pdf, 3.1 MB)  addresses aspects such as economic output in the City of Munich and the surrounding region, as well as describing the employment and labor market situation in the Bavarian capital.

For 2020, of course, the economic figures are clearly impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Clemens Baumgärtner, head of the Department of Labor and Economic Development: “The direct effects of the coronavirus pandemic on economic life have been and continue to be dramatic. Around one third of all employees in Munich are working reduced hours. The number of unemployed in Munich has also risen by about 13,500 over the past year. Numerous sectors and important infrastructure facilities have had to deal with a massive drop in business. These developments have impacted the city’s financial situation and budget. Particularly hard hit are Messe München, Munich Airport, and municipal finances.

However, there are also positive developments to report. The manufacturing industry, an important economic pillar in the city, has recovered to the previous year’s level. And particularly noteworthy is Munich’s vital information and communications sector. This sector’s products and services have experienced a boom in demand during the pandemic and can boast significant growth figures."
