In 2016 the Department of Labor and Economic Development investigated the situation of the cultural and creative industries in the local region. To this end, it joined with the Munich Metropolitan Region (EMM e.V.), the FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Munich and Upper Bavaria and a new partner in the shape of the Chamber of Skilled Crafts for Munich and Upper Bavaria to commission a “Datenreport zur Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft in der Metropolregion 2016 “ (2016 Data Report on the Cultural and Creative Industries in the Munich Metropolitan Region; available in German only).

The new study picks up where its predecessor (the EMM 2012, 2. Teilbericht [EMM 2012, 2nd Sub-Report]) left off in 2012. This year's edition once again devotes an entire section to the City of Munich.

Findings of the study for the City of Munich

15,321 self-employed persons and companies with a total of 68,035 gainfully employed individuals make up the core of Munich's cultural and creative industries, which account for 3.8% of the city's total economic output – much more than the national average of 2.4%.

Above-average growth in Munich's cultural and creative industries is driven by the economic performance of most of the eleven distinct market segments – a clear indication of a broad-based, stable and constant development that is peerless in Germany at the present time.

The four local segments with the highest turnover dominate their respective markets nationwide: These segments cover companies in the film industry (18% of nationwide turnover), the book market and the art market (10% each) and the Munich advertising market (9%). At the same time, the Bavarian capital's design industry (8%) and music industry (7%) likewise outstrip the national average and occupy strong market positions.

Munich's USP: A healthy balance of market segments
The findings referred to above also underscore one of the factors that set Munich apart: Of these “engines of economic growth”, an unusually high number constitute segments with a more pronounced cultural focus.

In many comparable locations and regions, two of the more creative segments – advertising and the software/gaming industry – tend to dominate. By contrast, Munich continues to build on cultural market structures that have grown organically over many decades.

Development potential in these industries
Thanks to a new, extended analytical model, both the Munich report and the report on the Munich Metropolitan Region for the first time complement a study of core activities with a systematic investigation of self-employed individuals who each turn over less than EUR 17,500 a year, as well as people in marginal employment/activities in the relevant industries.

The new model thus sheds light on the artistic and often experimental margins of the cultural and creative industries. In doing so, they also address a key question that concerns the City of Munich's Cultural and Creative Industries Team: What conditions are needed to enable players in these industries to develop their full potential? In this context, the City of Munich pays especially close attention to current figures regarding the income situation in the artistic and cultural professions that form the beating heart of the cultural and creative industries.
